This windoor is NOT portable. It is definitely more of a permamnent installation. In order for it to be safe and so people don’t have easy access breaking into your home, you do have to screw mount this to the existing window (causing damage to the metal or wood) but you can have someone from the company come and install it for you. You do need power tools but it takes about an hour to install. We don’t use the inside landing as it kinda shakes a bit.

My cats love it! They go in and out of it all the time. They were used to a cat door at the old place we lived at with a sliding door cat door so this was a breeze but then maybe we just have smart cats, LOL!

There was a bit more to the installation than I expected, I did not like putting screws into our window frame and one screw snapped in half during installation. The landing needs support, we put some of the flat packing stuff and some newspapers underneath to keep it solid.

It is advertised as weather-tight, however, cold air leaks in around the door flap.

I really like the locking mechanism but our cats get around the one way locks by scratching and pulling at the door with their claws.

However, it is adequate to the job, the cats like access to the outdoors, and I don’t have to get up to open the door 10 times a night.

EDIT: After owning this product for awhile, I would lower the rating quite a bit if I could. The door leaks a LOT of cold in, not only wind around the door, but allows a lot of the house heat to leak out just because the plastic is rather thin. I would NOT recommend this door for areas that get very cold. Speaking of the thin plastic, the locks DO NOT work at all, as our cats pushed through anyway and broke the door flap in half!

I didnt want to cut a hole in the wall to install a catflap, so decided to try this one. The installation is really simple, took me 15 minutes. The product sits well in my window. One of our cats learned how to open and close the flap for herself in a few days. The other cat hasnt learned how to do this yet and will sit and wait for me to open the flap for her. This isnt the fault of the catflap by the way… I just think one of our cats wouldn’t win the Nobel Prize, if you know what I mean.

The reason for 4 and not 5 stars is simply insulation. We live in NY and its incredibly cold here right now. When sitting near the window where this is installed I can feel a slight chill entering the room. This is probably because I have yet to apply the insulation tape which came with the product though. I am sure once I seal up all the tiny gaps it will be better insulated. The flap is held closed by a strong magnet (rare earth magnet I think) but tonight there was a strong wind and it managed to push the flap open once but it locked right back into place.

The direction control switches are good and allow us to let the cats in but not back out again.

    Overall I recommend this product.

  4. The windoor is excellent. We have custom windows so we had to install a little differently than the instructions provided but it still fit great and works perfectly. We already had a catdoor in another place and our cats were used to going through it so it only took our cats about 2 days to get fully used to using the windoor instead of us opening and shutting the door at their command. I would recommend this product!

  5. I’m actually rather disappointed with this product. The description makes it seem like you can put it in without any damage to your home, yet for the most secure fit, you have to screw it into place.

My biggest disappointment has to do with how sturdy it is when locked. I purchased this specifically so I could lock the cats in at night so they don’t tangle with the local wildlife. (Skunks, coyotes and large cats like bobcats and mountain lions.)

While the door was locked, one of my cats decided she wanted out and she managed to snap the plastic door into at least 3 pieces. (I haven’t actually managed to find them all.) This left me with a hole in the window. Fortunately I had not screwed the thing into place yet so this was easy to rectify.

I think if you’re okay with fastening this into place and don’t intend to actually use the locking mechanism, it should actually be just fine. But if you have to lock in a determined cat, you might want to see what your other options are.
